Upgrading to Marketify 2.0.0

Marketify 2.0.0 is a complete rewrite of the Marketify WordPress theme bringing it up to date with current WordPress standards, third-party plugins, and best practices. We’ve done our best to ensure making the transition to the latest version is as easy as possible, however some steps still need to be taken to ensure your website continues to run smoothly.

Always Use a Staging Server

To ensure there is no downtime or incompatibles with your website you should always install a major theme update on a staging server first. This will allow you to make the necessary adjustments and then migrate them to a production website.

Backup Your Website

Even though you are first testing on a staging server you can never have too many backups. It is very important to create a backup of your database. You can read more about this here.

Update Plugins

The first step is make sure all of your plugins are up to date. Be sure you have entered your license keys for any premium plugins you may have purchased so you can receive automatic updates. The following two are very important:

  • Easy Digital Downloads: 2.4.9 or greater
  • Easy Digital Downloads – Frontend Submissions: 2.3.4 or greater

Update Marketify

Once your plugins are up to date then you can update Marketify to version 2.0.0.

Review Customizer Settings

Marketify 2.0.0 introduces many new settings in the Theme Customizer that give you greater control over your website. When upgrading to 2.0.0 your existing settings will be migrated to the new settings. However, you should still review these settings and customize any new items. Simply visit “Appearance > Customize” and review each item carefully.

Update Image Sizes

Marketify 2.0.0 changes the way images are handled. Marketify will now automatically crop images to the same size to create a uniform grid. To adjust the size of the images that are generated you can visit “Settings > Media” and make your adjustments. It is important to note that the settings here do not necessarily reflect the dimensions that will be output on the frontend. Since Marketify is a fully responsive theme the images can appear at any size depending on the device you are using. The dimensions used in “Settings > Media” are to determine the size of images WordPress generates (and then loads) when browsing your website.

  • Thumbnail: Not used by default
  • Medium: Used in the Downloads grid. Recommended sizes: 740 x 600.
  • Large: Used when viewing an individual Download. Recommended sizes: 1024 x 1024

Once you have adjusted the sizes you need to regenerate any existing images you have on your website. Install the  Regenerate Thumbnails plugin then visit “Tools > Regenerate” and complete the process.

Marketify 2.0.0 introduces three separate columns for your footer widgets allowing you to stack more widgets on top of each other in each column. Previously only one column was used for all of the widgets and the columns were created dynamically. Simply drag your existing widgets to the new “Footer Center” and “Footer Right” widget areas.

Marketify 2.0.0 updates the way to access popular items in a category. Simply append the word “popular” to any category archive to display popular items (sorted by sales) for that category. For example  https://demo.astoundify.com/marketify/downloads/category/tumblr/ becomes https://demo.astoundify.com/marketify/downloads/category/tumblr/popular/

Adjust Plugins

In Marketify 2.0.0 we’ve made it easier to get up and running by removing the requirements for a few plugins. This will help get your site set up faster and in some cases speed up your website.

Soliloquy Lite

Soliloquy Lite has been deprecated in favor of a new widget included in the theme:  Feature Callout. It is highly recommended to use this widget instead of the Soliloquy slider.

Visit “Appearance > Widgets” and drag the widget to your “Homepage” widget area.
Adjust the settings to your liking. You can copy and paste your slide settings from Soliloquy
Deactivate the Soliloquy Lite plugin
Remove the Slider widgets from your homepage

Frontend Product Details

We have also removed the need for the “Easy Digital Downloads – Frontend Submissions Product Details” plugin. Frontend Submissions 2.3 introduces this functionality built in so the plugin is no longer needed.

Deactivate the plugin
Visit “EDD FES > Submission Form” and recheck the items you want to appear on your Download page
Visit “Appearance > Widgets” and add the “Download Meta” widget to your “Download Sidebar” widget area.

Testimonials by WooThemes

In “Appearance > Widgets” in your “Testimonials” widget settings, change the “Testimonials Per Row:” setting to 0 for both instances.

Update Your Child Theme

The last and most crucial aspect of updating your website is inspecting changes in your child theme. If you have duplicated template files to your child theme then you will need to review your version against the version in Marketify 2.0.0

  • Did the HTML markup change?
  • Was an action hook added?
  • Are your original modifications still necessary?

You should also review any additional CSS you have added to the style.css to ensure the styles still apply, and are still relevant.
